Plug-in solar panels: what they are, what they output and what you get

Plug-in solar panels are ordinary solar PV panels supplied as part of a complete, pre-matched kit with a small microinverter and a manufacturer-supplied lead and fused plug. In Great Britain the kit's AC output is capped at 800 VA from 27 August 2026, so panels are sized in DC watts above that figure — typically 515 W to 1,260 W of panels behind a single 799 VA microinverter. Panels are never bought loose and added to a kit.

What “plug-in solar panels” means

The phrase describes the panels inside a complete plug-in solar kit, not a separate product you buy on their own. A kit is one tested combination: solar PV panels, a small microinverter matched to them, the mounting hardware, and a connection lead terminating in a BS 1363 fused plug. Plug it into a suitable socket and the panels offset electricity your home is already drawing.

That distinction matters commercially as well as legally. Loose panels sold with the suggestion that you can wire your own plug-in system are not a compliant plug-in solar device, and pairing mismatched panels with an inverter you bought elsewhere invalidates both the product specification and the warranty.

Panels versus rooftop solar

The panels themselves are conventional silicon PV — the same technology as a rooftop array, in similar physical sizes. The difference is scale and connection method. A rooftop system is wired into your consumer unit by an installer and might run to several kilowatts. A plug-in kit is capped at 800 VA of AC output, is entirely reversible, and is not designed to power a home during a power cut.

Panel sizes and DC capacity

Panel capacity is quoted in DC watts under standard test conditions. Modern panels used in plug-in kits typically fall between 400 W and 630 W each, with physical dimensions around 1.7–2.0 m tall by 1.0–1.1 m wide. A kit's headline figure is the sum of its panels, so a two-panel kit at 445 W each is described as an 890 W kit.

Every kit in the range uses the same microinverter, limited to 799 VA of continuous AC output. Going up the range buys you more panel area capturing light for more of the day — not a higher peak output.

Why panel capacity exceeds the AC limit

A 1,260 W array behind a 799 VA inverter looks like a mismatch until you consider how rarely panels reach their rated figure in Great Britain. Rated output assumes 1,000 W/m² of irradiance at 25°C. Real British conditions — lower irradiance, imperfect angles, panels that warm up and lose efficiency — mean a typical panel spends most of its working day well below its nameplate.

Oversizing the DC array pushes the inverter up towards its ceiling earlier in the morning and holds it there later into the afternoon. On the brightest few hours of the best summer days the inverter reaches its limit and clips the excess. That clipped energy is a small annual loss compared with the extra generation gained on every ordinary day.

What the panels realistically produce

Generation depends on orientation, tilt, shading and where in Great Britain you are. A south-facing, unshaded, well-tilted array on the south coast will considerably out-produce an east-facing patio in central Scotland with a building opposite.

The four things that move output most

  • Orientation — south is best; east and west typically give a broader, flatter curve at lower total output; north is not worth it.
  • Shading — even partial shade across one panel disproportionately reduces the array's output for that period.
  • Tilt — a steeper angle favours winter sun, a shallower one favours summer; the adjustable stand supplied with the kit sets this.
  • Self-consumption — generation you do not use at the time is exported, and you should not assume you will be paid for it.

What comes with the panels

A complete kit is supplied ready to install without buying anything extra. Alongside the panels you get the matched microinverter, the DC leads that connect the two, mounting hardware appropriate to the kit, and the AC connection lead with its fused plug. Nothing is sourced separately and nothing is spliced into your fixed wiring.

What to check before buying panels

Pre-purchase checks

  • The device is a complete, compliant kit — not loose panels or self-assembled parts.
  • The inverter's AC apparent output does not exceed 800 VA.
  • There is a suitable socket in reach of the kit's own lead, with residual-current protection on that circuit and no extension lead or adaptor involved.
  • The mounting surface can take the panel weight and wind loading, and you are permitted to fix into it.
  • Any landlord, freeholder or managing-agent permission is in writing before installation.
