Plug-in solar in the UK: the complete 2026 guide
Plug-in solar is a complete, pre-matched solar PV kit that connects to a suitable domestic socket rather than being wired into your consumer unit. In Great Britain a dedicated framework applies from 27 August 2026: single-phase solar PV only, a maximum inverter apparent output of 800 VA, one plug-in solar device per household under the current G98 arrangements, and network notification to your DNO still required.

What is plug-in solar?
Plug-in solar is a complete, matched set of solar panels and a microinverter, supplied with a manufacturer-fitted mains plug. It connects to a standard household socket, and your home uses that solar electricity first, drawing less from the grid. Under the Great Britain 2026 framework a device is limited to 800 VA of AC output, so it offsets part of your usage rather than powering a whole home.
What plug-in solar actually is
A plug-in solar kit is a single, tested combination of solar panels and a microinverter, supplied as one product with its own connection lead. The panels stand on a patio, garden or ground-accessible flat roof using the supplied mounting hardware; the microinverter converts their DC output to mains AC; the lead plugs into a suitable socket. Nothing is spliced into your fixed wiring, and nothing about the kit is assembled by you from loose parts.
You will see the same idea described as plug in solar panels, plug and play solar, a mini solar system, balcony solar panels or a balcony power plant. The vocabulary comes from continental Europe, where these systems have been common for years. The hardware concept is the same; the rules that govern it in Great Britain are new and specific.
What it is not
Plug-in solar is not a rooftop installation, and it is not a battery product. It does not power your home during a power cut, it does not replace a full PV system, and it is not designed to be expanded with extra panels bought separately. The value is in a modest, honest reduction of the electricity you buy while the sun is on the panels.
How a kit works at your property
Output follows daylight. On a bright day a kit near its rated output covers a good share of the background load a home always draws — fridge, router, standby, hot water controls — and any appliance running at the time. What you do not use in that moment flows out to the network.
This is why self-consumption matters more than headline wattage. A kit that generates while you are out and nothing is running saves less than the same kit in a household with daytime occupancy. Our savings calculator lets you vary that assumption rather than accepting a single marketing figure.
The 2026 rules in Great Britain
The Plugs and Sockets etc. (Amendment) Regulations 2026 come into force on 27 August 2026. Alongside the Government's July 2026 response and the final interim product specification, they set out what a compliant plug-in solar device is and how it may be supplied and used.

The 800 VA figure is an AC apparent-output limit at the inverter, not a limit on panel capacity. That is why a kit can carry more than 800 W of panels: the DC array is deliberately larger than the AC output so the inverter runs closer to its ceiling for more of the day, while the AC output stays inside the limit at all times.

Is your home suitable?
Three things decide it: somewhere to put panels that gets real sunlight, a socket and circuit that are suitable, and permission to proceed if the property is not entirely yours to alter.
Quick suitability check
- An outdoor space with a broadly south-facing, east-facing or west-facing aspect and no heavy shading for most of the day.
- A suitable socket in reach of the kit's own lead — outdoor sockets must have been installed and certified by a qualified electrician.
- Modern residual-current protection on that circuit (an RCD or RCBO), and no need for an extension lead or adaptor of any kind.
- A mounting position that can take the panel's weight and wind loading without drilling into anything you are not permitted to alter.
- Any permission needed from a landlord, freeholder, managing agent or relevant authority, obtained in writing before installation.
- No existing plug-in solar device at the property, since the current arrangements allow one per household.

Notification, safety and getting it right
Two obligations sit alongside the purchase. First, network notification: your DNO must be told about the device under G98, and SocketPower handles the applicable notification for kits bought from us — the detail is in the G98 guide and the notification service page.
Second, electrical safety. The socket and circuit must be suitable, residual-current protection must be present, and the manufacturer's instructions must be followed exactly.
