There isn't one best plug-in solar system for every home. For most buyers it comes down to the space you have, your budget and how much annual generation you want. Which plug-in solar panel setup is right for your home?

Small garden or patio

Where you have room for one panel's width, the Pro Compact 515W is the sensible starting point: the smallest footprint in the range and the lowest price. More on positioning in our garden and patio guide.

Larger garden or terrace

With space for two panels at ground level, the Pro Duo 890W is the balanced choice, and the Pro Plus 1030W adds DC capacity where width allows.

Flat or balcony

Maximum annual generation

Where space is not the constraint, the Pro Max 1260W carries the largest array in the range. The peak is still 799 VA, so the gain shows up in mornings, evenings and dull days rather than at midday.

515W vs 890W vs 1030W vs 1260W: what changes?

The AC ceiling does not move. Every kit in the range uses one microinverter limited to 799 VA continuous AC output, so no kit here can push more than that into your home at any moment.

What extra DC panel capacity changes is how often and how long the inverter sits at that ceiling. A larger array reaches full output earlier in the morning, holds it later into the evening, and gets closer to it under cloud or in winter. In return, on bright summer middays the surplus is clipped — the panels could produce more than the inverter is allowed to pass — so each step up gives a smaller gain than the wattage jump suggests, for more space, more weight and a higher price. What to look for when choosing plug-in solar panels in the UK

1. Is it a compliant, complete kit?

A kit that is not a compliant complete device is not a cheaper option — it is a different product with a different risk. Look for single-phase solar PV, an inverter apparent output no higher than 800 VA, one matched product supplied with its own BS 1363 fused plug, and no battery built in.

2. Panel watts are not the same as output

The AC limit is the same for every compliant kit, so a bigger headline wattage does not mean a bigger peak. What it changes is how often the inverter reaches its ceiling and how the kit behaves on dull days. Bigger arrays generate more over a year, with diminishing returns around midday.

3. Will it physically fit?

Measure first. A two-panel kit needs a wider run of level ground, patio or flat roof, and the panels are heavy. Ballast weights are not included. A kit you cannot install safely where you want it is no bargain, whatever the specification.

4. What is actually in the box?

Check the panel count and wattage, the microinverter, the connection lead and plug, mounting hardware for that kit, monitoring and the documentation. Anything you have to buy separately is both an extra cost and a compliance question.

5. Who handles your G98 notification?

Network notification under G98 is required either way. Check whether the seller handles the applicable notification or leaves it to you, and whether it is included in the price or charged extra.

6. Warranty and someone to call

Look at the warranty term for the panel and the inverter, who honours it, and whether support is reachable in the UK. A long warranty from an unreachable seller is not worth much.

7. The real total cost

Add anything your home needs first — a certified outdoor socket, a residual-current protection upgrade, ballast or fixings beyond what is supplied. Those costs belong to your property, but they belong in your comparison.

Immediate disqualifiers

Walk away if you see any of these

  • An inverter apparent output above 800 VA, or a seller who is vague about the AC figure and talks only about panel watts.
  • A plug-in battery, a battery-integrated device, or a “solar plus storage” plug-in bundle — these are outside the Great Britain framework.
  • A kit sold as separate parts, or an invitation to add panels, swap the inverter or combine two kits.
  • Any suggestion that an extension lead, multiway adaptor, travel adaptor or plug-in RCD adaptor is acceptable.
  • A promise of specific savings, guaranteed export payments or eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee.
  • A claim that no network notification is needed, or that notification is optional.
  • Any implication that the framework applies in Northern Ireland — it applies in Great Britain from 27 August 2026.
