Garden and patio solar: where plug-in kits actually work best
A garden, patio or ground-accessible flat roof is where a plug-in solar kit works best: the mounting hardware is designed to stand free rather than fix to a wall, you can point it where the sun actually is, and you can reach it to clean it. What you need is a firm level surface, a suitable external socket, ballast, and permission to use the space.

Why ground level is the right answer
Plug-in solar in Europe is often photographed hanging from an apartment balcony. That is a different hardware category. The kits SocketPower supplies are ground-mount systems: The supplied mounting hardware is designed for gardens, patios, ground installations and, where the kit supports it, suitable wall installations.
The advantages are real rather than a consolation. A free-standing frame can be angled properly instead of being dictated by the surface it hangs on. It can be turned or moved if a tree grows or you move house. And you can reach it — to clear leaves, wipe off winter grime and check the ballast — without a ladder.
Where it goes
- A patio, terrace or paved area with an unobstructed southern outlook.
- A lawn or gravel area with firm, level ground beneath.
- A ground-accessible flat roof — a garage or extension you can safely walk on and that can carry the load.
- A sound, load-bearing wall, where your kit is supplied with the hybrid ground/wall mounting system (Compact, Plus and Max — the Duo is ground-mount only).
Not a pitched roof, not a balcony railing, and not anywhere you cannot safely reach.
Orientation, tilt and the shading test
Position drives output more than any other decision you make after choosing a kit.

Tilt matters too: roughly 30° from horizontal is the reference case. A near-vertical position loses around a quarter of the annual figure, which is one reason railing-mounted systems underperform free-standing ones.
Surface, ballast and wind
It must be installed in accordance with the supplier instructions and your own site conditions.
Before the frame goes down
- The surface is firm, level and will not sink or shift when wet.
- The surface can carry the weight of the frame, the panels and the ballast together.
- The position is not a wind funnel between two buildings or at an exposed corner.
- Ballast is sourced and matches the weight and placement in the manufacturer's instructions.
- There is clear space behind and beneath the panels for air to move.
- Nothing about the position blocks a fire escape, a footpath or access to a meter or stopcock.
Re-check the ballast after any severe weather. It is a two-minute job and it is the single most useful piece of maintenance a plug-in solar owner does.
The external socket requirement
You will need a suitable external socket at the installation location.
The device plugs directly into a suitable fixed socket using the manufacturer-supplied plug and lead. If you do not have an external socket in the right place, adding one is work on your fixed wiring and is a job for a qualified electrician — not a reason to reach for an extension lead. Extension leads, multiway adaptors, travel adaptors and plug-in RCD adaptors are prohibited with these devices.

Permissions, neighbours and the view
Reversible mounting does not remove the need for consent. If you rent, ask your landlord. If you lease, check the lease and ask the freeholder or managing agent. If your property is listed, in a conservation area or subject to an Article 4 direction, speak to your local planning authority about anything visible from outside.

Plug-in solar in Great Britain: the framework covers single-phase solar PV with a maximum inverter apparent output of 800 VA, and SocketPower devices are limited to 799 VA continuous AC output. Plug-in batteries and battery-integrated devices are outside the framework and are not sold by SocketPower. The current G98 arrangements allow one plug-in solar device per household, and network notification remains required — SocketPower handles the applicable notification for kits bought from us. This framework applies in Great Britain from 27 August 2026 and not in Northern Ireland.
