Plug-in solar vs rooftop solar: an honest comparison

They are not competitors. A rooftop system is a designed, installed, several-kilowatt asset attached to your building. A plug-in kit is a capped 800 VA appliance you stand in the garden and unplug when you move. If you own a suitable roof and can fund a full installation, rooftop generates far more. If you rent, lease, cannot use your roof, or simply do not want a five-figure project, plug-in is the only route that exists.

When plug-in solar is the right answer

  • You rent, or you lease a flat, and a permanent roof installation is not yours to authorise.
  • Your roof faces the wrong way, is shaded, is too small, or is not structurally suitable.
  • You want to start generating this month rather than next quarter.
  • You do not want to commit a four or five figure sum to find out whether solar suits your household.
  • You may move within a few years and want to take the asset with you.
  • You have a garden, patio or accessible flat roof with a reasonable southern outlook.

When rooftop solar is the right answer

  • You own the property and the roof is suitable, unshaded and large enough.
  • You want to displace a substantial share of your annual consumption, not a slice of daytime load.
  • You want to pair generation with a home battery or an EV charger at meaningful scale.
  • You want export payments and are prepared to go through MCS certification.
  • You intend to stay in the property long enough to see the payback through.

If that describes you, get rooftop quotes. We would rather say so than sell you an 800 VA device that was never going to meet the expectation.

Can you have both?

Not straightforwardly. The current network rules allow one plug-in solar device per household, and an existing generating installation changes what your Distribution Network Operator already has on record. If you have rooftop solar and want to add a plug-in kit, the notification position needs checking first — find your network operator or ask us.

What about a battery?

Plug-in batteries and battery-integrated devices are outside this framework entirely. Storage has to be part of a conventional designed installation. See the regulation hub for the detail.

Putting the numbers in proportion

A 4 kW rooftop array in the Midlands might produce in the region of 3,400 kWh a year. The Pro Max 1260W, the largest plug-in kit we sell, models at a few hundred kWh below a third of that — because it is physically a third of the panel area behind an inverter capped at 799 VA.
