Plug-in solar in winter: what output really looks like month by month
A plug-in solar kit in Great Britain produces roughly forty times more in June than in December. Winter output is small but not nothing, and because household electricity use is highest in winter, almost all of what little you generate gets used. Expect the year's savings to arrive between March and September, and plan on that basis.

The shape of a British solar year
Solar output in Great Britain is not a gentle seasonal wave — it is a steep hill. Daylight hours, sun angle and cloud all move in the same direction at once, so midwinter and midsummer are barely the same product.
The table below models a Pro Duo 890W in the the midlands and mid wales band, south-facing at 30° with light shading: about 751 kWh a year.

Four summer months (May to August) deliver about 386 kWh. Four winter months (November to February) deliver about 84 kWh between them.
Why the drop is so steep
Daylight hours
In late December much of Great Britain gets under eight hours of daylight, and the useful generating window inside that is shorter still. In June it is over sixteen hours, with a long productive shoulder either side of noon.
Sun angle
A low midwinter sun spreads the same energy over a much larger area and passes through more atmosphere to get there. A fixed 30° panel is also badly angled for it — steeper is better in winter, which is worth knowing if your frame is adjustable.
Cloud
Overcast conditions reduce output to a fraction of a clear-sky figure. They do not stop it. Panels respond to diffuse daylight, so a grey December day still produces something.
What that means for your savings
There is a redeeming feature. Winter is when a household draws most electricity — lights on at four, more cooking, more time indoors — so nearly all of the little you generate is used immediately rather than exported. Self-consumption in winter is typically higher than in summer, when the biggest generating hours land on an empty house.
The practical implication is about expectations. If you buy in October and judge the kit by its first three months, you will be disappointed by a system that is performing exactly as modelled. Looking after a kit through winter
Seasonal checks
- Re-check ballast weight and placement after any named storm or high-wind event.
- Clear leaves and debris from around and beneath the frame so air can move.
- Give the panel face a gentle clean when grime builds up — water and a soft brush, from the ground.
- Let snow slide off a tilted panel; never scrape, lever or climb on it.
- Check the plug, lead and socket for damage, heat marks or moisture ingress.
- Watch the monitoring app: a sudden drop against neighbouring days usually means shading, soiling or a fault worth investigating.
